Much of today's Paris is a newer city than most people realize. In 1853 Napoleon III commissioned Baron Haussmann to modernize the city, when he created the Grand Boulevards and signature buildings we call Haussmannian. Fortunately, the Marais district, which was then seedy and run down, was spared Haussmann's reconstruction. For that we should be grateful, since it is now one of the loveliest parts of the city and the most complete example of pre-revolutionary architecture in Paris.
