Historical Center of Paris
Two Bedroom

Paris Rental ID #277
Sleeps up to 4
Two Bedroom - Fantastic Location!

What a fantastic central location, steeped in history!  In fact, from your apartment window, looking down the pedestrian walkway which is over 500 years old, you can see both the oldest restaurant in Europe...maybe even the world! Le Procope, and the place where the French guillotine was first tried out! High from your 4th European floor perch, you will enjoy watching the passers by from this large, comfortable apartment. The apartment building is actually located over an ‘arcade’ area, with several shops and restaurants, limited only to pedestrians on a lovely cobblestone street.

This apartment boasts of over 70 m2 (@750 ft2) and its 4th European floor (5th US) elevation is serviced by an elevator. It has very good security and sleeps up to 4 persons; 3 adults and a young adult or child. The main bedroom has a king size bed. The second smaller bedroom has a two bunk unit, one on top of the other, which is meant only for children or young adults. The top bunk is accessed by a ladder, the mattresses are 190 cm x 80 cm (73 inches x 31 in) and are recommended for persons less than 6 feet tall - an adult could sleep on the bottom bunk. Parents must use caution with children on the bunk beds, especially when using the wooden two bedroom Historical Center Paris rental window viewladder that is permanently attached to the unit. A large bathroom services the apartment and includes a large sink, a WC, a bathtub and shower combo unit – the shower head is on wall and can be removed to be used as a hand held sprayer.

Most of the apartment has tile flooring, except the bedrooms which are wood parquet and were recently been repainted in April 2012. The open kitchen with a generous amount of counter space has a three burner stove top, an oven, refrigerator/freezer combo, microwave, dishwasher and is separated by a counter from the living area. The higher elevation and southeast exposure allows in a good deal of light in the apartment. A large dining table is more than enough for six people. The living room is also large, with a sofa and armchair, plenty of room to relax and share the day’s stories or plan for the next day. This is a quiet apartment, the property owner has installed double pane windows and the street below only allows pedestrians; no vehicular traffic – not even bicycles! The owner says you can hear birds chirp on sunny mornings!

The apartment – where Juliette Drouet, Victor Hugo’s lover lived in the mid 1800's – is accessed by a pedestrian only arcade which was the main street of a medieval part of Paris that was miraculously left intact, and protected from “modernization”, when under Louis Napoleon, Blvd. St. Germain was opened by demolishing most of the Latin Quarter. The Odeon metro station is only 2 minute walk and the St. Michel/Notre Dame RER, connecting directly with Paris’ two airports is 7-9 minute walk.

When you step outside your apartment building each day, you are surrounded by cafes, restaurants, chocolate shops, outdoor cafes, and tons of history! From here a 12-15 minute stroll will take you to the Cathedral of Notre Dame and in only 5 minutes to the River Seine and all of the St. Michel/St. Germain area. From your balconies you can see the apartment where Mr. Guillotin, the inventor of the guillotine, lived. The balconies look on the main street where this device, intended to make beheading more “human”, and was first tried with an act of cruelty on animals, by cutting the head of sheep. It was subsequently put into practical use, to sever the heads of over 1500 French royalty and government officials, on the Place de la Revolution...later renamed Place la Concorde!

The apartment was easy to get to, easy to utilize and very centrally located. We loved the area that the apartment was in. Drawbacks were we couldn't figure out how to use the clothes washer in the bathroom closet, there weren't very many towels and we had to really search for them (found them in the master bedroom closet), and the phone didn't work (we were trying to call a few local places and had to ultimately use our cell phone).  Also the second bedroom was soooooo small and the closets were locked the luggage for the two people sleeping in there had to be in the living room.
The master bedroom has very, very, very loud creaky floors. But they are old floors so no biggie. LOVED the fact that we didn't hear any street traffic as we've stayed in Paris before and that was the #1 reason we couldn't sleep well. The windows were excellent because when they were closed, you couldn't hear anything down below. The pedestrian alley below was really great. Very easy to get to the grocery store (though the written directions were a little confusing so had to ask around when we were on the street). Great restaurants, cafes, ice cream shops, etc. So easy to get to metro stations. Overall a super great experience.

Great overall experience with VIP. I'd say that the sending of the key in the mail needs to be a little more thorough...meaning at least put a tracking number or delivery confirmation on it if you're going to send it thru USPS. The key took a very long time to reach us and it didn't arrive until the day before we were to board a 7:30am flight. Tracking the key is also important so you know whether someone actually did receive it or not.  Just a thought. I'd gladly pay a few extra bucks to have it sent FedEx or UPS to ensure it's arrival in a timely manner.
